Giving sight to those in the dark.

Our KNX Hero of the Week is an optometrist from Los Angeles, who is helping people around the world see again.

"Ninety percent of the world doesn't have access to an eye doctor," says Dr. Max Cheng.

Losing sight can affect a person's job, livelihood, and can even be life-threatening. Through his work and passion to help others, Dr. Cheng is improving the life of people with vision impairments, one patient at a time.

"We go to countries where people have never seen an eye doctor in their entire life," remarks Dr. Cheng.

Places like Nepal, Philippines, Peru, and Jamaica.

"You can imagine the huge impact this will have on [a] person," says Dr. Cheng. "Their ability to do well in school. Their ability to go into certain careers, or to do certain jobs."

Closer to home, Dr. Cheng runs a Health Fair on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, helping the homeless get back on their feet.

"We actually do things like provide flu shots and medical consultations," says Dr. Cheng.  "The big part of the health fair is actually providing an eye exam and free glasses."

"The reason why glasses are so important is [that we] hear so many stories of people who could not work because they could not afford glasses, and they cannot see. And, if they cannot see, they cannot work. So they are stuck in this cycle. Because of their vision, they are not able to get a job."

Dr. James Hammond has worked side-by-side with Dr. Cheng. He says Dr. Cheng exemplifies what it means "to go above and beyond."

"Just assembling a team of optometrists and optometry students, he just puts a tremendous amount of work in it," says Dr. Hammond. "Rather than going on vacation, he [Dr. Cheng] does these medical missions."

"I listen the KNX all the time," says Dr. Hammond, "And I've heard of 'Hero of the Week'.  I thought you know, 'he'd be perfect for that!'"

Dr. Max Cheng has demonstrated how a simple eye test or a pair of glasses can make a world of difference.  And, because of his efforts, he has been named this week's KNX Hero of the week.

"A small act of kindness can change someone's life, " says Dr. Cheng.
