Lori and Mitch Atkins

KNX Hero of the Week
Thursday, May 23rd
A couple in Placentia is using their passion to help young people participate in live theatre.

Here are the KNX Heroes of the Week:

Mitch and Lori Atkins founded Musical Theatre Orange County sixteen years ago to help get kids into a creative atmosphere, that was comparable to theatre programs that rival professional production companies.

The couple is married and have raised four kids of their own.  Lori tells me it was a way to give youth in the community access to an experience they otherwise wouldn't have:

"The reason why we do this, is because of the kids. We're changing lives. And there's nothing better than that," says Lori.

The Theatre Company is a non-profit that's supported through donations.  Mitch tells me that participants learn from working industry directors, choreographers, musical directors and technicians.

"We bring in seasoned professionals," says Mitch. "We create this model where they are mentoring [the younger actors]."

Each season, about a hundred kids participate.  Past productions include Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Tarzan. This year's show is Mary Poppins, and performances start the last weekend of July.

"This is a love and a passion of ours. And, it's our way to give back to the community," says Lori. "We knew we had a purpose, and we needed to fulfill that."

We are proud to name Mitch and Lori Atkins as the KNX Heroes of the Week!
