Gene Rogers

KNX Hero of the Week
Wednesday, March 13th
A blind man from Long Beach has found a way to help others through music.

Here's the KNX Hero of the Week:

About four or five days a week, Gene Rogers delights the ears of visitors and staff at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach by playing the piano.

"I just enjoy it," Gene tells KNX.

The 76-year-old volunteer gets up early each morning to make the 45-minute journey by bus, which isn't easy. Gene tells me he was diagnosed as being legally blind when he was young, and over the past 10 to 15 years or so, things have gotten worse.

"I now use a cane to get around," says Gene.

The piano player says he started volunteering because he needed something to do. He says he first learned how to play piano by ear when he was a kid, and with the help of a teacher, he was able to learn a few chords. Playing the ivory keys came naturally to Gene, who is able to pick up songs without any sheet music.

We are proud to name Gene Rogers as the KNX Hero of the Week!
