(KNX 1070) -- A mother of three pleaded guilty to injecting her own blood into her son's nose and mouth in order to grab the attention of hospital staff where her son was a patient.

Last spring, Elizabeth Malone, the mother of a 5-year-old boy, who unable to speak, says she often disagreed with her son's treatment while he was hospitalized at Inova Fairfax in Virginia. But says, she approved of his treatment when he was bleeding. Malone admits to injecting him with her blood to recreate his symptoms.

“She denies any intention to harm her child,” her attorney told the judge, according to NBC.  “She loves her child like any mother.”

Malone injected blood into her son's trach tube and central line.

After a nurse at the hospital became suspicious, a hidden camera was installed in the boy's room. The nurse claims she saw a syringe in Malone's sleeve, and found a bloody napkin in the bathroom.

When Malone was initially arrested she denied injecting her son, but when detectives told her they'd captured her on video, she broke down and admitted what she'd done.

“I don't want to intentionally cause him harm,” she said in court according to NBC. “I know I did, I know I did. Punish me but please let me see my children again.”

The prosecution says that since Malone's arrest, her son's health has improved and he's back in school.

Malone will be sentenced in mid-July.
