Traffic Stop in South LA Ends with Suspect and Officer Wounded

(KNX 1070) -- An LAPD Newton Division officer is in stable condition Sunday after a traffic stop in South Los Angeles Saturday night that ended in gunfire and left the officer and the suspected shooter wounded.

Gang investigators with LAPD attempted to pull over a driver just after 9 p.m. near 51st Street and Long Beach Avenue in South L.A.'s Central-Alameda neighborhood, according to the agency.

The driver of the car stopped but then ran. As the officer gave chase, another man appeared and began to shoot at the officer, the gunman and the officer were both injured and transported to a local hospital. 

The officer sustained a serious injury but was in stable condition on Sunday morning. An update on the shooter's condition was not available.

The driver who was initially stopped is still on the run, and LAPD is looking for the public's help locating him. He's described as a black individual around 6 feet, 2 inches tall and 180 pounds.

Robbery detectives have joined the investigation, police said.
