Students Return to School After Apparent Suicide of Boy in OC

March 06, 2019 - 7:35 am

Students returned to class Wednesday morning at a campus in Aliso Viejo, a day after a young man apparently committed suicide.

Counselors will be available as long as they are needed.

Don Juan Avila elementary and middle schools both closed for a day, when the 13 year-old's body was found in an open area.

School District Spokesperson Carrie Braun says officials are still gathering details:

"Our investigators will be conducting interviews with both family members and other students and friends who knew him, trying to get a picture of this young man and why he may have done this," she said.

The boy was a former student and had been reported missing by his parents.

He was being sought by authorities when his body was discovered by a custodial worker.

Two schools were closed for an Orange County Sheriff's investigation Tuesday morning.

The 13-year-old boy committed suicide at an Aliso Viejo Middle School and teachers, parents, and Students join together to find a way thru the tragedy.

It was a janitor at Don Juan Avila Middle School who found the body in the campus quad area. Orange County Sheriff's and the District officials closed the campus before students could arrive.

At nearby Grand Park Tuesday, about 100 people students, parents and religious counselors met for an impromptu prayer session.

Mari Heilman, a youth counselor who had attended the school, hopes that people took away something from the session: the need for people to reach out to each other.

Investigators are speaking with the boys family and friends and will be expanding their probe to try and determine what might have been the motive for his desperate act.

Authorities closed a middle school and adjacent elementary school in Aliso Viejo this morning following the discovery of the body of a 13-year-old boy who apparently took his own life.

Police were called to Don Juan Avila Middle School, 26278 Wood Canyon Drive, about 6:30 a.m. when a custodial worker discovered the body, said Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

School and sheriff's officials closed both the middle school and attached Don Juan Avila Elementary, and students arriving at the campus were taken to a nearby school site to be picked up by parents, Braun said.

The boy was reported missing earlier this morning, and deputies were looking for him at the time his body was found, Braun said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said in a tweet: "OCSD is conducting a death investigation at Don Juan Avila Middle School. This morning at approx 0630 deputies were dispatched to an apparent suicide on the campus. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased 13 year old male. We are conducting a full investigation."
