Southbound Interstate 5 Re-Opened After Deadly Crash, One Woman Dead, 9 Injured

August 23, 2018 - 12:00 pm

(KNX 1070) - A driver is being accused of driving under the influence in a deadly chain-reaction crash on the southbound 5 freeway in Irvine near the 405 highway.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Irvine near the 405 were shut down for hours Thursday morning but lanes are now re-opened.

We have in-depth, team coverage with KNX's Margaret Carerro:

All lanes had been closed for hours after the crash left mangled cars strewn across the roadway.

The arrested driver was said to be going at 100 miles an hour in a Dodge Charger at 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning and the driver of the Prius he hit tells CBS-2 he was behaving erratically.

After that initial crash, seven other vehicles plowed into the wreckage and that's when the woman died. A baby in her car was injured, along with two other kids aged 10 and 11 in another vehicle.

In all nine people injured, eight of them taken to local hospitals.
