Santa Monica Launches E-Scooter, E-Bike Pilot Program

September 17, 2018 - 8:31 am

(KNX 1070) -- Santa Monica launches its pilot program to test out e-scooters and electric bikes Monday.

Only four companies have been selected to launch the city's Shared Mobility Pilot Program, including Bird, Lime, Lyft and Uber's Jump.

KNX reporter Karen Adams:

Santa Monica spokeswoman Constance Farrell says the program will build upon the city's existing Breeze Bike Share system.

Rules will be enforced.

The electric scooters and bikes are not allowed on Santa Monica's beach bike path, pier or parks. During  Monday's launch, officials will be introducing some new technology and new plans for docking the devices.

The various e-scooter companies were announced to take part in the program in August.  The decision was up to Santa Monica's Director of Planning and Community Development, David Martin, and it was expected he would choose two scooter companies at the most, but word came down today that he will allow Bird, Jump, Lime, and Lyft to participate.

Each company will begin the pilot program on September 17 by providing 750 motorized scooters. The scooters will not be allowed on the beach bike path, the pier or at Santa Monica city parks.
