(KNX 1070) - A downtown shopping mall is trying out a new concept in security and customer relations.

A robot will begin regular patrols at the BLOC at Seventh and Flower Streets in downtown Los Angeles.

The robot is five feet tall, weighs 400 pounds and looks a little like R2D2, but the Knightscope Robot is not there for looks.

Dan Cote, general manager at the BLOC, put a question to the robot after it stopped in front of him, and the robot answered him.

Eventually, the robot will have the ability to patrol and observe for two hours or more in between 15-minute charging breaks, answer routine questions from shoppers and in the long run, recommend to customers what stores and sales are available.

Now, all it needs is a name and maybe a voice with a little more personality.
