(KNX 1070) - Research indicates most illegal marijuana farms on public land in California are contaminated with restricted or banned pesticides.

Dr. Mourad Gabriel is the co-director of the Integral Ecology Research Center and he talked to KNX. KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta:

Researchers have found evidence of carbofuran and other highly toxic pesticides at close to 90 percent of the sites they've visited this year.

US Attorney McGregor Scott says an ongoing operation targeting illegal marijuana farms on public lands has, so far, led to the eradication of 95 grow sites and the removal of more than 20,000 pounds of fertilizer and pesticides. Scott says close to 80 people have been arrested.

More than 80 firearms have been seized.
