New Law Gives Immigrants Freedom to Report Crimes, Testify

May 17, 2018 - 1:59 pm

LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) - Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill Thursday that immediately protects an illegal immigrant from disclosing their status in open court.

A defense attorney or any other court official must now go behind closed doors and prove to the judge the relevancy of asking an illegal immigrant their status in open court.

The bill's co-author Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher says this new law will give those victims of a crime and witnesses the freedom to testify.

The measure did pass the California legislature with bipartisan support last week.
