New Agreement Between OC Sheriff, Fire on Helicopter Use

August 15, 2018 - 1:25 pm

(KNX 1070) - A new agreement is in effect between the Orange County Sheriff and the Fire departments on how helicopter resources will be used in emergencies.

In the past, there had been conflicts over which agency and which helicopter would fly specific missions.

Under the new protocols information on 911 calls, that go to Sheriff's Dispatch when a chopper is needed, will also be patched through to the Fire Authority’s dispatcher and they will make the call for the best chopper for the mission.

KNX's Pete Demetriou reports Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchins said the goal is improved public service:

The two agencies will also work on consolidating maintenance of helicopters and in the future, possible consolidation of dispatch centers at John Wayne Airport, with Fullerton Airport as a backup site. The first part of the protocols go into effect in 30 days.
