(KNX 1070) -- Once again, the National Transportation Safety Board is urging California to ban all cell phone use in cars, even by drivers using hands-free devices.

A federal safety expert is calling on California to pass a new law to ban all cell phone use in cars, even of hands-free devices.

Nicholas Worrell of the National Transportation Safety Board spoke at an event on distracted driving in Sacramento, told a Sacramento event on distracted driving that hands-free is not risk-free:

"Awareness must be joined, must be coupled with good laws, the right enforcement," he said.

Kelly Nantel of the National Safety Council tells KNX her group strongly backs calls for a total ban, saying the threat here is not just about handling a phone.

The state currently bans use of hand-held phones but hands-free is still legal.
