LOS ANGELES - A man is suing the city of Los Angeles, alleging a large pothole on Wilshire Boulevard caused him to crash the electric scooter he was riding and suffer serious injuries in 2018.

Nathan Bliss' Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed Thursday, alleges negligence and a dangerous condition on public property. Bliss seeks unspecified damages.

A representative for the City Attorney's Office could not be immediately reached.

Bliss was riding a Bird electric scooter at about 15 miles per hour while traveling east on Wilshire Boulevard west of Whittier Drive on Sept. 18 when his device hit a pothole near where the pavement meets the concrete gutter, the suit states.

Bliss suffered significant injuries, including a broken right femur among five fractures that required surgery and the placement of eight metal screws and a metal bone blade, according to the lawsuit.

The plaintiff has been unable to work, the suit states. He has lost wages and believes those losses will mount, according to his suit.

The city knew or should have known of the pothole and other hazardous degradations of the roadway, but did not repair it or make it safe, the suit states.
