LAUSD Hits Pause On Painting Over Controversial Mural at Koreatown School

(KNX 1070) -- The LA Unified School District is hitting the pause button on an earlier plan to paint over a mural at RFK Community Schools in Koreatown.

The district was going to remove the mural by artist Beau Stanton after Korean activists demanded it, saying its sun rays depict the Rising Sun Flag of Japanese Imperialism.

High up on the exterior wall of the RFK Community School’s theater is a mural depicting the profile of actress Ava Gardner, blended with other elements from the profile and radial lines. Then, artist Shepard Fairey said if that mural is removed, he would insist that his portrait mural of Robert F. Kennedy also be removed.

School Board President Monica Garcia says they plan to have those talks after the winter break, and she said no one person's voice led to their decision.

Among those who urged the district to reconsider were RFK's sons.

The muralist Beau Stanton uses radial lines in his work to draw a viewers gaze to the focal point says the group has it wrong.
