(KNX 1070) -- A Los Angeles Police sergeant has entered Alcoholics Anonymous following his DUI arrest alongside a commander.

KNX reporter Margaret Carrero:

The lawyer representing Sgt. James Kelly says the incident back in April was the impetus for his client to take action.

Video from the April incident in Glendale showed Kelly barely able to put one foot in front of the other. Commander Nicole Mehringer was his passenger in what was reportedly an unmarked cruiser.

She has been charged with public intoxication.  Each of their attorneys entered not guilty pleas on their behalf Wednesday. Both have also been relieved of duty without pay from the LAPD pending disciplinary action.

Kelly is accused of driving drunk.  Mehringer is charged with public intoxication.

Glendale police say they found the two under the influence inside an unmarked police cruiser in late April.

They are facing misdemeanor charges after they were found allegedly drunk inside an unmarked car in Glendale.

Police say the two were discovered in a black Dodge Charger around 1 a.m., near Lomita Avenue and Brand Boulevard in April.

Both were arrested.

Kelly is facing one count of driving under the influence. Prosecutors say he had a blood alcohol level of .20.

Mehringer is charged with a single count of public intoxication.

The LAPD is investigating and says it doesn't comment on personnel matters.
