LA City Councilman Mitch O' Farrell Wants Answers from DWP Over Power Outages

July 12, 2018 - 8:13 am

(KNX 1070) - DWP crews are busy repairing equipment following power outages that impacted thousands of customers earlier Thursday. There were outages in Bel Air, Koreatown, Westlake and Windsor Square.

DWP says the outage in Windsor Square is because of overloaded circuits from last weekend's heat wave.  As of Thursday afternoon, DWP said on Twitter Windsor Square has been fully restored.

Lots of people were angry following outages over the weekend because they say there wasn't enough information about them.

Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O' Farrell wrote a letter to the head of the DWP David Wright. The councilman says his office received numerous complaints about the lack of communication from the utility.

O'Farrell has sent a letter to the DWP asking for a report on what caused the outages, an update on infrastructure upgrades underway and what's being done to prevent widespread outages in the future. He says hundreds of his constituents were left without power for days and many of them struggled to get timely and accurate information from DWP about it.

DWP spokesman Joe Ramallo says there were so many outages during the heat storm that some of those estimated restoration times had to be pushed back.

KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta reports:

Bel Air resident and KNX listener Dan Harrison tells us it was hard getting information on this:

KNX has spoken to a DWP spokesperson confirming the outage, but saying they are still working out how many people are affected and exactly what caused the outage.

Their website did list more than 2,700 customers as part of this outage.
