Search for Missing Newport Beach Boater Suspended

An 18-foot Boston Whaler washed ashore at 48th Street Beach in Newport Beach late Sunday.

NEWPORT BEACH (KNX1070) - The search for man who may have fallen off his boat somewhere between Catalina and Newport Beach was suspended Monday. The 18-foot Boston Whaler hit the sand at 48th Street Beach late Sunday.

After a 19-hour search for 47-year-old Nicholas Busick of Newport Beach, authorities called off the hunt at about 11:20 a.m., said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney. The search covered 186 nautical square miles, Barney said.

Initially, investigators weren’t sure if the boat had become unmoored, or if the captain went overboard. Helicopter crews with the Coast Guard used night vision to search the water overnight.

Busick is described as about 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, wearing a dark t-shirt and grey shorts. The man's family says he is an experienced captain.
