LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) - Forbes magazine says Los Angeles is the worst city in the country for renters.

The average rent at the end of last year was just under $2200 a month. That eats up more than 40 percent of the local median household income of $63,000.

Vacancy is low, allowing landlords to raise rents at a much faster pace than in most of the rest of the country, the article states. San Francisco is second. Nine of the 15 cities and counties on the list are in California.

More people across L.A. County say their quality of life is slipping. A survey from UCLA found people are especially anxious about increasing rent and housing prices.

Former L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky led the survey and tells KNX young people are slowly losing that optimism.

A quarter of people surveyed say they're worried they could end up homeless.
