The order comes after one exploded, killing a woman on a Southwest flight.

LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) - The FAA is ordering the inspection of thousands of jet engines, after one exploded, killing a woman on a Southwest flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration says in the next two weeks, it will issue a directive to require ultrasonic inspections of fan blades like the one that snapped off a Southwest Airlines plane on Tuesday.

The FAA announcement comes nearly a year after the engine's manufacturer recommended the additional inspections, and a month after European regulators ordered their airlines to do the work. On average, a plane with this kind of engine takes off somewhere in the world every two seconds. It is used in more than 6,700 airliners.
