In 2004, a similar outsider, Sen. John Kerry started early in Iowa, made people comfortable with his message and he got his party’s nomination.

LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti visits Iowa this weekend partly to help fellow Democrats and perhaps to raise his own political profile in a Presidential Primary state.

Garcetti’s speech in Sacramento this week pointed out that California and Iowa share common visions and understanding of things like agriculture, job development, perspectives on renewable energy. By carrying that message to some political groups in three cities in Iowa, he sounds like an early contender.

Chris Larimer, an political analyst at University of Northern Iowa says convincing Iowans of that requires a strategy like what he is doing this weekend.

Larimer points out in 2004, a similar outsider, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry started early in Iowa, made people comfortable with his message and he got his party’s nomination.

The mayor of a city has never been elected president. Can Eric Garcetti get past that hurdle?
