Plan to Split California into Three States Gains Backing

The initiative has enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.

LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) - Voters in November could decide on whether to split California into three states.

The man behind the initiative venture capitalist Tim Draper says he's received enough signatures to qualify the initiative for the ballot.

Draper says people in California would be better served by three smaller state governments.

But democratic strategist Steven Maviglio says it's a bad idea.

A similar initiative from Draper in 2014 to split California into six states never made the ballot. If this current measure was to pass, Congress would need to approve the split.
