Long Beach Police to Upgrade Body Cam Technology

The department is going to spend $2 million to equip all patrol officers with the best camera technology.

LONG BEACH (KNX1070)  - After a year of testing body-worn cameras, the Long Beach Police Department is expanding its trial program, but now is asking other manufactures to take part in the trials.

Over the past year up to 93 patrol officers have been wearing cameras provided by Utility Associates, but Long Beach Administrative Bureau Chief Jason Campbell says that there have been problems with the performance of the system.

Campbell says while they are asking more companies to provide cameras for field trials, the existing cameras will stay in use.

Within the next six months, the LBPD is hoping they can make a decision on a new camera vendor and will enter into a 5-year $2 million contract to equip all patrol officers with the best camera technology for the foreseeable future.
