SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 64-year-old Irvine woman was charged today with killing her 92-year-old mother in Huntington Beach for financial gain.

Cynthia Roberta Strange was charged with a single count of murder with a special circumstances allegation of murder for financial gain, making her eligible for at least life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted at trial.

Strange is accused of killing her mother, Ruth Strange, whose body was found in her pool with multiple cuts on the victim's head, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Police were asked to do a welfare check on the victim just before 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at her residence in the 6800 block of Vista Del Sol Drive, according to Huntington Beach Officer Angela Bennett. The caller said they had been unable to contact Ruth Strange after going to her home to pick her up for a doctor's appointment, Bennett said.

Evidence led police to the victim's daughter, Bennett said.
