(KNX 1070) -- A 73-year old man is in custody, accused of stabbing his 11-year old step-daughter to death, and nearly killing his wife with gunshot and stab wounds.

The violence happened this morning at a house in Garden Grove. Police found a 36-year old woman on the front lawn, badly wounded. She said her husband was in the backyard, and her three children were inside the house.

Police have identified the man as Tanh Thien Tran.

Police Lieutenant Carl Whitney tells KNX, the man, who was armed with a knife, refused to drop the weapon.

Officers were able to sneak into the house and grab two boys, ages three and six, who were unharmed.

By then, the suspect was inside the house. But Whitney says they had to rescue the third child.

The girl died at the hospital. Her mother is in critical but stable condition.

Officers got the knife away from the suspect, who had self-inflicted stab wounds, which are described as superficial.
