East LA Park Shootout Becomes an Issue in LASD Sheriff's Race

September 21, 2018 - 10:32 am

(KNX 1070) - This week's deadly shootout between a suspected gang member and deputies in East Los Angeles has become an issue in the sheriff's race.

KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta:

Of the three patrol vehicles that responded to the call about some suspected gang members flashing a gun at a group of people, one had a lone deputy on board, along with a civilian department employee.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell insists the civilian was not replacing a deputy in that patrol car that responded to this dangerous call that turned into a shootout that left two deputies wounded, one suspect dead and another critically hurt.

His challenger, retired department veteran Alex Villanueva, insists that should have been a two-deputy unit.

Villanueva's been endorsed by the rank-and-file deputies' union. McDonnell's got the backing of a union that represents other department employees.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's personnel were all over a park in East Los Angeles Thursday morning, investigating a shootout that left a suspect dead, another injured and two deputies wounded.

Two sheriff's deputies were hospitalized after being wounded in a shooting at a park in East Los Angeles that left a suspect dead. One has been released from the hospital; the other one is still there.

Detectives believe the shootout was sparked after a gang-related incident earlier.

The shooting occurred about 6:35 p.m. Wednesday evening at Ruben F. Salazar Park.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell says the deputies were shot in the upper body. McDonnell says this all began around dinnertime last night when they received a call about a person in a car pointing a gun at someone a few blocks away.   Deputies located the car and followed it to the park.

According to the Sheriff when the deputies got out, the suspects started shooting and deputies returned fire.

The deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon.

A second suspect was wounded and taken to a hospital. A third suspect was also arrested.

This story is developing.
