Dramatic Plume of Smoke in El Segundo Caused by Power Failure

September 17, 2018 - 10:44 am

(KNX 1070) - A huge plume of black smoke was seen across the LA basin this morning triggered by a burn-off at the Chevron Refinery in El Segundo.

The smoke was seen as far away as Whittier and led to worried posts and video on social media.

After initial confusion, the message went out that there was no fire or threat at the refinery.

El Segundo fire battalion chief Breck Slover  tells KNX it was an unplanned event caused by a power failure:

Chevron spokesman Rod Spackman tells KNX that a power failure in one part of the plant led to a shut-down and the burning off of excess gas:

Chevron says the burn-off has been reported to pollution monitors at the AQ-MD.
