Deputies Shoot, Kill Man Armed with Knife in Thousand Oaks

October 10, 2018 - 9:51 am

(KNX 1070) - Investigators are still trying to figure what prompted a man, who was involved in a traffic accident in Thousand Oaks, to move toward deputies with a knife.

He was shot and killed.

The deputies opened fire on the man as he allegedly approached them with a knife.  The incident started with what seemed to be a relatively minor crash around 1:15am. The man's pickup truck took out some fencing, but he was sitting in his truck with a knife.

Sergeant Eric Buschow with the Ventura County Sheriff's department told KNX's Jon Baird the deputies repeatedly tried to engage in discussion with him, and to de-escalate the situation and drop the knife.

Buschow says when he kept moving toward deputies, they shot and killed him.

He also noted those beanbag rounds are really painful and usually bring people down, but they didn’t faze him.

The department will be waiting for toxicology reports.
