(KNX 1070) --A deadly disease that could threaten the state's poultry industry is back in Southern California.

Newcastle disease was found in chickens on about 40 private properties, mostly in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

Steve Lyle with the state Department of Food and Agriculture tells KNX that the disease only affects chickens but people can spread it.

He says officials are working to eradicate the disease before it spreads.

The last case of Newscastle disease in California was in 2002 and 2003. More than three million commercial chickens were put down.
