(KNX 1070) -- The Centers for Disease Control has a salmonella mystery on its hands.

Officials say nearly 100 people in 29 states, including California, have gotten sick from a drug-resistant strain of the bacteria after coming into contact with raw chicken, but they can't pin down the source of the contamination.

“The outbreak strain of Salmonella was found in live chickens and in many types of raw chicken products, indicating it might be widespread in the chicken industry,” the CDC said in a statement.

“A single, common supplier of raw chicken products or of live chickens has not been identified.”

The salmonella strain has shown up in samples from several different raw chicken products including pet food, chicken pieces, ground pieces, whole chickens and eggs.

The bacteria have also been found in live chickens.

Of the 92 people who have gotten sick, 21 had to be hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
