(KNX 1070) -- California, already a leader in clean energy development is about to take it another step farther with a that just cleared the state Assembly and would put the state on a path to 100-percent renewable energy generation by 2045.

If it's signed into law, the bill's first threshold to cross would be generating 60-percent of the power used by the state from renewable sources by 2030.

Bill author is Los Angeles, California Senator Kevin de Leon, who tells KNX some utilities are already coming close:

UC Berkeley energy analyst Severin Borenstein tells KNX the potential for producing entirely clean energy lies in future technological advancements:

Borenstein believes the renewable energy push could cost utility customers more,
in the short term.
