(KNX 1070) - California's high school and middle school students could soon get a chance to sleep in a little.

A bill that would mandate an 8:30 a.m. start time for older students is starting to make its way through the legislature.

La Canada Flintridge State Senator Anthony Portantino, the bill's author, tells KNX  he's simply following the scientific guidance of the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Teachers unions have opposed later school start times,  saying it messes with sports and extracurricular schedules.

They want start times left up to individual districts.
