Beverly Hills to Consider Ban on all Tobacco Sales

May 07, 2019 - 10:06 am

The City of Beverly Hills is poised to stop tobacco sales. They’ll consider the ban at tonight’s meeting and if they follow through they would be the first city in the nation to pass such a law.

The city has already banned flavored tobacco products and now t’s about to consider the outright ban of all tobacco products.

There is some blowback though.

Store owners contend a ban on all tobacco products would really hurt them.  One gas station owner pointed out customers don’t just come in for a pack of smokes.

Cigar lounges would be exempt from the ban.  But a retail lobbyist suggested the city would likely be sued over such a law and city staff seem to be anticipating a legal battle.

While no official legislation has been introduced, Beverly Hills Mayor John Mirisch said in February that he wants to finalize a law on tobacco sales by May.

Beverly Hills City Council plans to discuss the commission’s recommendations during a meeting tonight.

It would make Beverly Hills the first city in the nation to ban all tobacco sales.
