(KNX 1070) -- News that a former priest and Banning school administrator is accused of trying to engage in lewd acts with a teenage boy is not sitting well with some churchgoers where he once worked.

It turns out a Banning school administrator who pleaded not guilty in a teen sex case is a former Roman Catholic priest.

KNX Margaret Carrero:

The Los Angeles Archdiocese confirms Charles Mayer served at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Northridge until 2000 when he was placed on leave for violating church rules regarding interaction with young people.

He's currently in jail after being accused of trying to lure a minor to have sex.

Mayer was a Banning Unified School District Administrator, accused of trying to solicit a minor for sex, and faced his first court hearing in San Bernardino Court this month. San Bernardino Sheriff's detectives are concerned that he may have committed crimes against other minors in the area.

Detectives and Mayer chatted back and forth for five days, during which time Mayer sent nude pictures of himself to the decoy and wanted the decoy to come back to his residence in Menifee for the weekend where they could engage in sexual acts. Mayer made arrangements to meet the decoy at an agreed upon location in Rancho Cucamonga, where he could pick the decoy up to go back to his residence for the night.

The five-day investigation started online and ended with an arrest in Rancho Cucamonga, according to San Bernardino Sheriff's spokesperson Jody Miller.

Mayer, 55,  of Menifee, CA, was arrested last week. Detectives booked him on three felony counts, sending harmful materials to a minor, as well as contacting and arranging to meet a minor for sex acts.

Bail is set at $1 million.

Mayer had been a teacher at Nicolet Middle School and had been elevated to take the post of Dean of Students in the fall.

Detectives are trying to find out if any other students may have been victimized by Mayer prior to his arrest.
