(KNX 1070) -  The Los Angeles Animal Services department is trying to figure out what to do with a pit bull that mauled a two-month-old baby in a family’s home in Woodland Hills.

It was a near tragedy. The dog somehow escaped from its pen when one of the baby’s parents was answering the door for a delivery.

The baby was in a car seat on the floor inside the home and the pit bull attacked the infant boy, mauling his face and breaking some bones.

Officer Mike Lopez with the LAPD spoke to reporter Jon Baird:

The child was rushed to Northridge Medical Center and is listed in critical condition but is expected to survive.

The incident happened Monday afternoon. LAPD wasnotified about it later in the day.

Representatives from LA Animal Services went out to the home Monday night to try to determine the fate of the dog and whether it would be quarantined.
