Alleged Dumping of Homeless Man Prompts Calls for More Help for Mentally Ill

(KNX1070) - The alleged dumping of a homeless man by LA County Sheriff’s deputies prompts a call for more help for the mentally ill.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department told a council committee that the deputies followed policy back in January when they offered to give a homeless man a ride to a bus stop in San Pedro.

Considering the man had a warrant and appeared unable to care for himself based on video of the incident, Councilman Joe Buscaino believes he should have been taken in –at the very least on a 5150 hold. He says part of the city and county’s homeless strategy calls for mental health service providers inside the jails...

He also doesn’t feel like a 24 to 72-hour psych hold is enough. He wants to see more long-term care for the mentally ill.
