SANTA ANA (CNS) - Four people were killed in a two-vehicle crash today in Santa Ana and one of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

"Manslaughter charges could be added," said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department. "He (the arrested motorist) was transported (to an area hospital) as a trauma patient because of the violence of the collision. He has been treated and has been okayed to be released to us, and he will be transported to jail."

Authorities were notified of the crash at Fourth Street and Tustin Avenue at 2:30 a.m., Bertagna said. A black Jeep going westbound collided with a white Chevrolet pickup truck going southbound on Tustin Avenue, he said.

"Both vehicles flipped over multiple times,' he said. "The driver of the Jeep got out his vehicle, at the same time an off-duty firefighter and nurse were at the scene."

The firefighter was able to put out the fire and the nurse, his wife, rendered aid to the man driving the Jeep, who was the lone occupant of his vehicle. That 28-year-old man was taken to an area hospital and later released to police, Bertagna said.

The four people inside the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Tustin Avenue and Fourth Street are closed indefinitely while the investigation continues.
