August 15, 2018 - 10:41 am

(KNX 1070) - Three gang members have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man in South Los Angeles who spent his life trying to steer young people away from crime and violence.

With tears in her eyes, Garry Dorton’s mother gave thanks for those who helped capture her son’s killers. The shooting occurred July 1.

LAPD says they believe the three suspects, ages 18 through 24, targeted Garry and his five friends but does not believe they knew him personally. Garry worked as a community advocate and anti-gang activists.

KNX reporter Margaret Carrero:

LAPD Homicide Captain Peter Whittingham says,  two of the three men got out of a car on July 1 and shot at Garry Dorton and five others who were with him.

Dorton's mother says her son worked to prevent people - like the men arrested  - from turning to a life of crime.

One person who worked with Dorton,  says Dorton put his life on the line for peace and will never be forgotten.
