$14 Million Settlement in Mistaken LASD Shooting

August 27, 2018 - 2:42 pm

(KNX 1070) - A Pico Rivera family, who lost their father in a mistaken shooting by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies in 2014, accepted a $14 million civil settlement Monday.

They would also like to see proof of changes in department policies.

KNX reporter Pete Demetriou:

The family of Frank Mendoza Sr. say they still feel the loss but his son Frank Mendoza Jr. says there is no personal anger at Pico Rivera deputies.

The incident happened while deputies were chasing a gang member with a gun who had fired at deputies and run into the backyard of a home of Mendoza Sr.

When some family members ran out the front door, one deputy mistook Mendoza for the wanted man Cedric Ramirez and shot and killed him. Mendoza Jr. said while the family is satisfied with the settlement there is no personal animus against the deputies or the Sheriff's Department as a whole.

Attorney Garo Mardirossian told reporters that he and the family would appreciate a meeting with Sheriff Jim McDonnell to explain more fully the changes in tactics that have been implemented to ensure such a situation doesn’t happen again.

The settlement is one of the largest for a wrongful death in LA County History.
