On July 4, African American software engineer Wesly Michel turned to social media to share a video he recorded on his phone of an incident where a man (appearing to be white) called police on him while he was waiting for a friend outside a San Francisco apartment building.

Wesly's video, which has had over 1.4 million views so far, shows the man with his son, who pleading with his father not to call police. The man ignores his son's cries, and tells police Wesly is a "trespasser" in his building.

“Unfortunately this incident mirrors the experience that African Americans endure daily where we are questioned on whether we belong,” Michel, 35, a software engineer, said in a statement to CNN. “I videotaped this incident to protect myself and to support my story should police get involved.”

The man has been identified as Christopher Cukor, a YouTube executive.

“I believe that ultimately everyone wants to be seen for who they are and not prejudged,” Welsey said. “I’m an American, a brother, a son and an ambitious Engineer who loves to code and wants to greatly contribute to the tech world in (San Francisco), a city that I love.”
