The State Department has issued a Travel Advisory for Mexico -- warning Americans that they could face a heightened risk of murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery if they go there because of a rise in violent crime in many parts of the country.

The advisory also says the US government could be limited in its ability to help any travelers who get into trouble in some areas.

They should also reconsider traveling to the following states because of increased crime:

    Chihuahua
    Coahuila
    Durango
    Jalisco
    Mexico state
    Morelos
    Nayarit
    Nuevo Leon
    San Luis Potosi
    Sonora
    Zacatecas
