(KNX 1070) -- The United States Secret Service reported Wednesday that a man lit himself on fire just steps from the White House lawn. By Thursday the Maryland man had died.

Identified as Arnav Gupta, 33, of Bethesda, was initially reported missing by his family. Wednesday morning, Montgomery County Police said the family was “concerned for Gupta’s physical and emotional welfare."

A video was posted to social media showing the man engulfed in flames at the  Ellipse park, an area also known as President's Park South.

Jeffrey Adams, a Secret Service spokesman,  said in a statement that the agency’s Uniformed Division Officers “responded in seconds” after the “male individual lit himself on fire.” Officers then began administering first aid to the man.

“The individual is being transported to a local hospital,” Adams added.

The video below was captured by Alina Berzins, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate from Lorton, Virginia. The teen told CNBC she was visiting the National Mall when she saw the man running and covered in flames.

The video was posted by Berzins's father.
