Uber says more than 3,000 people in the U.S. were sexually assaulted during its rides in 2018.

The report also says nine people were murdered and 58 were killed in crashes.

While these incidents represent well under a thousandth of a percent of the ride-share giant's 1.3 billion rides in this country last year, it's still enough to give pause to Uber's top brass.

The company's chief legal officer says the numbers are jarring and hard to digest, and that Uber is a reflection of the society it serves.

It's the first study of its kind by the company, so there isn't much to compare it to, though New York City reports there were 533 such incidents on its transit system over that time frame.

Uber is seeing an impact from new safety regulations.  Its early estimates show sex assaults are down by up to 20% this year.
