Sexually Transmitted Diseases are reaching epidemic levels here in California.

A new report by the state Department of Public Health using the final data from last year finds that the three most common STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are all at their highest levels in 30 years.

These diseases can cause serious health problems.

Congenital syphilis can be fatal to infants -- there were 22 stillbirths or neonatal deaths in 2018.

If left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and lead to infertility, and syphilis can cause permanent loss of vision and hearing.

Pubic health officials say practicing safe sex and getting tested by your doctor are just two good ways to prevent and treat STDs.
