(KMOX) - Steak ‘n Shake has closed 57 of its locations due to poor sales during the coronavirus pandemic.

The restaurant chain parent company, Biglari Holdings Inc. announced in its first quarter report that it will close 51 company-owned stores and six franchises.

Currently, Steak ‘n Shake lists 40 locations in the St. Louis area on its website, but more than a dozen of those are "temporarily closed." The report didn’t name which specific locations will close permanently.

Last year there were 624 locations nationwide, at the start of this year there were only 553.

"The COVID-19 pandemic had an adverse effect on our restaurant operations, thereby resulting in the evaluation of company operated restaurants for recoverability,'' the report states.

Steak 'n Shake has been offering takeout, delivery and drive-thru for customers since closing its dining rooms in mid-March due to the pandemic. At that time, 62 company-owned stores were temporarily closed.
