The FBI responded to an “active shooter” in Honolulu Sunday in which two police officers were killed, according to the state's governor and reports.

The shooting unfolded Sunday in the Waikiki Beach neighborhood, which includes sandy beaches and high-rise hotels. "We are responding to an active shooter in Waikiki," FBI Honolulu Operational Support Technician Derek Hayes told CNN.

The officers were killed while responding to an assault call, according to a Honolulu City councilwoman. Gov. David Ige confirmed that two officers died in the shooting after suffering critical injuries.

Videos posted online show thick black smoke rising from the area. Reports say a suspect set a home on fire.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officers had responded to an assault call when they encountered a male with a firearm, who then opened fire, striking two officers.

A home the suspected gunman was believed to be inside caught fire and was quickly engulfed by flames. The fire at the home has since spread to two neighboring homes and a parked police vehicle. The Honolulu Fire Department was battling the blazes.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
