NEW YORK (1010 WINS) New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has dropped out of the 2020 presidential race.

He made the announcement to end his campaign in an interview on “Morning Joe” on MSNBC Friday morning.

De Blasio launched his bid for the nomination four months ago in May.

The quixotic longshot attempt never gained much ground as national polls largely showed him with no greater than one percent support.

President Donald Trump mocked de Blasio's decision on Twitter, writing, "Oh no, really big political news, perhaps the biggest story in years! Part time Mayor of New York City, @BilldeBlasio, who was polling at a solid ZERO but had tremendous room for growth, has shocking dropped out of the Presidential race. NYC is devastated, he’s coming home!"

His constituents opposed his bid as well, with 76 percent of New York City voters saying he shouldn't run in an April Quinnipiac poll.

He started his campaign at the Statue of Liberty where he said the nation was having an "identity crisis'' around immigration, which he called "the founding and unifying element of the American experience.''
