New Jersey Man's Genius Way to Beat NYC Traffic
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- As commuting gets tougher and tougher around the Tri-State area, more people are trying different alternatives. One New Jersey resident found his answer to the chaotic commute on the water.
David Pike runs a specialty bus company, New York Trolley.
"They are charter trolleys so we do wedding, pub crawls, corporate events and birthday parties in New York City," Pike said.
It is an odd style of transportation so it's only natural that he has a different way of getting to work.
"I take my Sea-Doo to work every day," Pike said.
The personal water craft takes more than an hour off his commute from Jersey City to Red Hook in Brooklyn.
"I was sick of the commute," Pike said. "It used to 90 minutes to get to work from taking the bus to trains to another bus to walking."
Now, it's 15 minutes straight across New York Harbor.
"So I can go 50 miles per hour on this, usually with the waves and the chop I'll have to go a bit slower," Pike said. "It's amazing. It's so cool to wake up in the morning by being on the water, seeing all the boats out there, seeing birds, seeing wildlife. It's really neat. I see the Staten Island Ferry, that's probably the biggest obstacle because they go so fast across the harbor. You see huge cruise ships, a lot of container ships, the Statue of Liberty, tourist boats."
So what does his wife think of his ride?
"She's kind of used to me by now, she did tell me to bring a cell phone, but joke's on her cause there's no service out there," Pike said.
