Bakery Makes 'Quarantine Cakes' to Save Business During Coronavirus Outbreak

There’s nothing a Pinterest-inspired cake can’t fix.

The coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll on the economy with many businesses, particularly small businesses, struggling to stay afloat.

One bakery in San Francisco decided to take back their power. Instead of crumbling under the pressure, they decided to use this opportunity to get crafty.

With weddings, baby showers, and birthdays canceling left and right, Butter& began creating and delivering what they call “quarantine cakes," according to PEOPLE.

The small cakes serve 1-2 people and come with a fun and timely PSA written on top like “wash your hands” or “don’t touch your face.”

There’s even a cake that reads, “pretend you’re an introvert,” to help those practicing self-distancing.

The too-cute-to-eat cakes come in a variety of delicious flavor options including: hazelnut and chocolate, match and strawberry, and salted caramel with chocolate.

Each cake costs $50.

Founder of the bakery, Amanda Nguyen, explained the idea behind selling the confection on Instagram writing: “The only way we survive is by creating value for our clients in a new way for the current day.”

“People can send them to each other, even if they can’t eat them together,” she said explaining that the cakes represent togetherness.

“In times of social isolation and fear, it’s human connection, acts of love, and comfort food that will get us through it,” she added.

Nguyen’s crafty plan worked because one day after launching the cakes, the bakery was experiencing its busiest day ever.

“What started as Butter&’s worst week ended up being our best in just over 24 hours,” she said.

She expressed just how grateful she was to those who supported her business and helped her keep the doors open: “To everyone who purchased a Quarantine Cake (& more), THANK YOU. You not only helped us cover costs for the week, you even enabled us to add to our reserves.”

Nguyen encouraged other businesses to feel inspired by her idea and create their own version of the “quarantine cake.”
