An engine on a Philippine Airlines flight to Manila caught fire as soon as the plane took off from LAX.

The pilot had to turn around and make an emergency landing with flames and smoke shooting out of the engine.

LAX spokesman Heath Montgomery tells KNX it certainly was terrifying for the passengers but the flight crew was ready :

"Pilots are very, very well trained to do that. Safety is the No. 1 priority for every airline that operates here and it's certainly our top priority. While it can be scary you're involved in that situation, the bottom line is that everybody was safe today and that's great news," Montgomery said.

There were 347 passengers and 18 crew members onboard the jetliner.  All the passengers are okay.
